The Real Deal on Volunteering with Kids

Writer's picture: Tucson Family VolunteersTucson Family Volunteers

Volunteering can offer parents a chance to participate in simple, mindless tasks or socialize with other adults. Are we really suggesting that you involve your kids in this time?!

Yes, we are. Here's are some ideas to keep in mind when volunteering with your kids:

Kids + Volunteering: What You Need to Know

1. Your enjoyment of going out into the community to give back rubs off on the kids. You'll be surprised at how much they can do + how the most random volunteering task can often be the one they like most!

2. Kids are kids. They bring themselves + their little personalities with them, even into a volunteering setting. So even if one kid whines or siblings get into a little spat, some volunteering is better than no volunteering. Maybe the experience isn't stellar; regardless, you planted the seed of community awareness + exposure to needs outside their own.

3. Both you + your kiddo(s) learn more about each other. You learn your Kid Volunteer has a deep passion for keeping the environment clean while volunteering at a park cleanup. Or you realize your family can enjoy working together in the kitchen when you volunteer to make breakfast for families in need. There's always something to gain when families volunteer together!

4. It's pretty cool for kids to grow up knowing they can make the community better + stronger. Whether it's bagging hygiene products for unhoused community members, or bundling diapers for babies in need, or writing notes to isolated seniors, kids are never too young to join you when you volunteer.

So if volunteering has historically been your thing to do alone, consider bringing your kids along. We know it won't always be perfect because, well, kids are kids. Just know that every exposure to community causes, new people + environments builds the whole family's volunteering muscles + plants the empathetic seeds for these kids who will be our Next Generation Leaders. 💪♥
